Lightning Protection in Texas

Site Safe Lightning Protection designs, installs and inspects lightning protection systems for homes, commercial buildings and oil & gas facilities in Texas, the state with the most lightning in the country.

Lightning protection for Texas homes

A home lightning protection system gives a strike a planned path to ground instead of through the attic, wiring and gas line. Texas homeowners' lightning claims averaged $60,382 in 2025, the highest of the top ten states for claims, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

We provide system design, lightning rod installation, grounding, inspection and maintenance for homes, detached garages, barns and other outbuildings. See our residential lightning protection services and what lightning rod installation costs.

Commercial lightning protection in Texas

Commercial buildings are bigger and usually taller than homes, so they collect more strikes, and a strike costs more when it takes down panels, servers or rooftop equipment. In the US, systems are designed to NFPA 780 or UL 96A. When an insurer, tenant or specification asks for a certified system, the usual document is a UL Master Label certificate, valid for five years.

We work on new construction and existing buildings, including inspection, maintenance, grounding and system testing. See commercial building lightning protection.

Oil & gas facilities and tank batteries

Lightning is a well-documented ignition source at production sites. A University of North Dakota review cites a study of 242 tank accidents over 40 years in which lightning was the most frequent cause, at 33%. The same review found most oil and gas states don't require lightning protection at production sites, so the decision usually sits with company policy.

At these sites grounding and bonding do most of the work: tanks, piping, separators and heater-treaters bonded into one grounding system, with attention to fiberglass tanks that can't carry current across their shell. See oil & gas facility lightning protection and tank battery lightning protection.

How much lightning Texas gets

Texas leads the country on total lightning because it is so large. Adjusted for area, it drops out of the top five states for density, behind Florida and Oklahoma (see the US lightning capital).

MeasureTexas figure
Total lightning, 202547 million events, most of any state (Vaisala)
Total flashes, 2025More than 13 million, 1.3 million above the state's average (AEM)
Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts, 20259,103, more than twice the next state (AEM)
Homeowners lightning claims, 20254,188 claims, 3rd in the US; average $60,382 (III)

Where in Texas lightning strikes most

Flash density, the number of cloud-to-ground strikes per square kilometer per year, varies several-fold across Texas. These figures are read off NOAA's 1995 to 2019 Texas map, so treat them as approximate:

RegionStrikes per km² a year
Upper Texas coast, Houston areaAbout 9 to 10, the state's highest
East and North Central Texas, including Dallas-Fort WorthAbout 6 to 8
Central and South TexasAbout 4 to 5
Panhandle and West Texas, including the Permian BasinAbout 3 to 5
Far West Texas (El Paso, Trans-Pecos)About 2 to 3, the state's lowest

A formal risk assessment starts from site-specific data rather than a statewide map; our lightning risk assessment guide shows how flash density feeds the NFPA 780 calculation. There's a local page for lightning protection in Dallas–Fort Worth, and the full season-by-region breakdown is in Texas lightning: when, where and how often it strikes.

When to install or inspect

Summer is the peak of the Texas season and spring is close behind. In North Texas, storms start in March, so have inspections, repairs and new installs done before then. A system only works if every connection is intact. NFPA 780 and LPI-175 recommend a visual inspection every year and a full inspection with testing every 3 to 5 years (1 to 3 years for critical facilities). Also have it inspected after a lightning strike or any roof or building work, such as re-roofing or adding solar or HVAC. See our lightning protection inspection service.

Frequently asked questions

Does Texas get a lot of lightning?

More than any other state in total. Vaisala counted 47 million lightning events in Texas in 2025, and AEM's network counted more than 13 million flashes, 1.3 million above the state's average. Adjusted for area, Florida and Oklahoma lead for density.

When is lightning season in Texas?

Summer is the peak, followed by spring. North Texas gets a strong spring season from March through May, and Texas still sees lightning in October and November, after most of the country has gone quiet.

Where in Texas does lightning strike most?

The upper Texas coast around Houston has the highest annual flash density on NOAA's 1995 to 2019 Texas maps, about 9 to 10 strikes per km² a year. East and North Central Texas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, follow at about 6 to 8. Far West Texas gets the least, about 2 to 3.

Is lightning protection required by code in Texas?

For most homes and ordinary commercial buildings, no. Texas cities adopt building codes one by one, so check with your local building department. Where protection is required or specified, the International Building Code (2024, section 2703.2) points to NFPA 780 and UL 96A. See is lightning protection required by code.
