Frequently asked questions
Is lightning protection required for commercial buildings?
Usually not for ordinary commercial buildings. Protection becomes required when the code adopted for that building type calls for it, or when an owner standard, insurer, lender or project specification does. Check with the local building department. See is lightning protection required by code.
Which standards apply to commercial lightning protection?
NFPA 780 is the US installation standard. UL 96A is the standard UL Solutions inspects a finished system against for a Master Label Certificate, and LPI-175 is the Lightning Protection Institute’s standard based on NFPA 780. See NFPA 780 explained.
How do you decide whether a building needs protection?
With a lightning risk assessment. NFPA 780 Annex L compares the building’s expected yearly strike frequency with a tolerable frequency, based on its construction, contents, occupancy and the consequences of damage. See lightning risk assessment.
How long is a UL Master Label Certificate valid?
Five years from issue, according to UL Solutions. It ends sooner if the structure, the roofing or the lightning protection system is modified or damaged. See UL 96A and the Master Label.
How often should a commercial lightning protection system be inspected?
NFPA 780 and LPI-175 recommend a visual inspection every year and a full inspection with testing every 3 to 5 years (1 to 3 years for critical facilities). You should also have your system inspected after a lightning strike or any roof or building work. Your insurer or contract may require more frequent inspections.
